This week I am giving a training day to a group of ICT GTPs. We are going to look at a wide variety of classroom routines to give lessons a similar structure. This is will include:
How to set up a lesson before the students come in
Arranging a seating plan
Delivering a starter activity
Lesson aims and objectives
Giving instructions
Creating a lesson plan
The following video demonstrated I start every ICT lesson. I do not allow the students into my room until I am 100% ready. I stand at the door to welcome them in. They check the seating plan and log on. There is then an activity that they are able to do independently whilst I take the register and ensure that everyone is ready to work.

All of my lessons use the same online lesson plan template that both the teacher and the students follow. To view an example go to MyTree. You can also view my complete online KS3 ICT SoW.

Just wondering Do starters have to be related to the topic you would be covering for that particular lesson? or can they be something totally unrelated and perhaps skills based? I teach mainly sixth formers and do not generally use a starter. I can see however, how they would benefit with a lower school class and would appreciate a bit of advice on this.
The things from this session that I will use in my teaching are;
Start to use much stronger control of folder and file management so that it is easier to locate and identify pupil’s work.
Reduce the targets on volume of work to allow pupils to focus on quality and purpose.
Put first tasks on the IWB to avoid the dead time while logging on at the start of the lesson.
Thanks for an enjoyable day! I am going to try out your lining up outside routine until I am ready and put instructions on the screen for the students to follow.
Getting students to always save a file as it is opened and tell them exactly where to save it and also give them a specific file name.
Try not to make a task longer than 10/15 minutes.
Really useful session for ideas in the classroom and teaching ICT.
1. Use control in the class, so the students know where they should be and what they should be doing at all times- have a clear strycture in ICT lesson plan.
2. Wikis and blogs with discussions to keep in contact with what other teachers are doing and updates on any new ideas that could be used in my teaching.
3. New ways of teaching traditional topics such as the powerpoint presentation topic- ways of introducing new and exciting methods rather than the traditional school method.
I would like to look at the lesson content and see how I can make the tasks more relevant, shorter and exciting.
Look at bringing into my lesson more life experiences for students to relate too.
I was interested in how Alex stopped the activity to recap the task, asking students to give examples. This helps those pupils that are unsure of the task and so gain a better understanding of what they need to do. I will try this in my lessons.
I will have seating plan, silence when students enter room, break up all tasks before taching, time everything and show examples on Powerpoint. Allow students to do an opening task, give learning objectives and aims, set tasks and time each task.
I will investigate Alex Savages sites.
With reference to teaching Powerpoint I will consider structure, then content, then background, font and finally animation when teaching Powerpoint.
Things to try in my lessons:
Break the lesson up more, into short 5/10 minute tasks, tell the kids how long they have, emphasising there is plenty of time and not to rush
Give the kids time to do things, time to think as well as apply
Ensure all files are saved as soon as they are opened, with a name I give to the kids. This is a distinct task in itself.
I have found this training session to be extremely valuable as it has given me some very practical ideas to use in my lessons and has also provided me with an opportunity to meet other GTPs in the area. As a result of the training the three things I will take away and aim to demonstrate in my lessons are;
Taking control of the classroom – I will ensure I am completely ready before I allow students into the room.
Reflection – I will allow students time to reflect on the work they have done and will include time for this in my lesson plans.
Not the expert – I will try to use the resources within the room i.e. the pupils and allow them to demonstrate their skills and show me how to do things.
