VSO Global Educators’ Register
VSO’s Global Educators Register has over 156 people trained to support teachers in embedding a global dimension in the curriculum. All Educators are VSO returned volunteers, have lived in a developing country for two years, received full training in Global Education activities, and have knowledge of a range of resources. This is a free resource, which can help a partnership develop or make the most of an existing one.

An effective way to bring an global dimension into your curriculum is by marking one of the international days such as World Water Day, Earth Day etc. Here are some resources and ideas you can use to celebrate the International Day of Peace on 21st September. Jeremy Gilley created an organisation called Peace One Day to encourage the United Nations to identify a specific date for an international day of peace. He created an inspirational video of his struggle to achieve this goal and why we need peace.

Have a peaceful day!
Tell your staff and students to make a special effort to treat each other with respect for one day and not raise their voices at each other. This may be more difficult for your staff than your students! You could also have a minute’s silence, or a time of reflection when you light a candle and or play some peaceful music.

Communicty.org Update
Global Dimension in ICT – We recently did a project to create leaflets about the right to education and learning to learn. We used a blog to share ideas with some schools in the USA and used photos of school life from our link schools in Malawi. We finished the project with a flashmeeting video conference to Summit High in Cincinnati.
Personalising Data – We’ve created a number of ICT resources using real data instead of imaginary scenarios.

I recently wrote an article about how to motivate students by enhancing the curriculum with a global dimension. It includes a KS3 ICT unit of work I’ve written to create leaflets about the right to education. There is also a blog that students can contribute comments to on learning to learn and digital image gallery of school life in the UK and Malawi.

QCA have launched their review of the KS3-KS4 curriculum. Their goal is to “Develop a modern world-class curriculum that will inspire and challenge all learners and prepare them for the future”.
A key way to bring learning to life is by setting it within a global context.

The 22nd March is World Water Day, so Global Dimension have put together a guide to water and recommended resources to help you get started in class. Teaching about the issues can help children to understand the importance of water, why people don’t have equal access to resources and what difficulties this presents. It also allows students to develop concern and understanding for the environment and make decisions on how their actions can influence these areas in the future.

The Global Dimension, along with seven other charities, have created a Global Village at the Education Show. Go and have a chat, check out resources and enter the prize-draw to win fair trade chocolate and teaching resources.

A new feature to eTwinning is the Quality Label. This label is granted to teachers of excellent eTwinning projects. It indicates that the project has reached a certain national and European standard. Therefore, there are two labels: the National Quality Label and the European Quality Label. Apply by 4 May 2007.

The BC have also announced the launch of the second UK eTwinning Awards. The Awards recognise high quality eTwinning projects that haven taken place in the school year 2006-07. For inspiration you can read about last year’s winners.

You can be part of the world’s longest chain by making a paper chain, and sending it to the German Leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, the most important leader in Europe in 2007.
You can also take part by adding your class to the online chain. By joining the chain you will be sending a message to world leaders, asking them to spend more on education. The site also has a wealth of resources including key facts, digital videos, lesson plans, photos and real life stories.

A Young Poets Competition was launched on the 27th of February and will be running until the 27th of April. Poets between the ages of 11-25 are invited to submit poetry on the theme of refuge. An anthology will be produced and the winners will also be invited to read their work during Refugee Week (18-24th of June).

Book Aid
The 10th year of World Book Day will take place on Thursday 1st March 2007. Your school can help us provide reading materials to school and public libraries in countires where there are desperate shortages ob books. This year’s theme is “A Day in My Life”. Sustainable Schools
The Sustainable Schools Framework sets out the government’s vision of how schools can become beacons of sustainability for their community. The framework promotes sustainability not as an ‘added extra’ but as a core context and ethos for whole school improvement.
There is also a new self-evaluation tool for schools to use to assess their sustainable practices, based on and complementing the current school self-evaluation (SEF) format.

International Day of Peace Update
On 21 September there were reported Peace Day activities in 200 countries, directly involving 27.6 million people. Furthermore, POD were honoured to collaborate with leading humanitarian organisations to document the first ever life-saving activities specific to Peace Day in southern Sudan and The Democratic Republic of the Congo and immunisation campaigns in a further eight countries worldwide.
Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we come together to make an urgent, heartfelt and unified call for a peaceful and sustainable world.
